Going out of town when you have pets can be a little stressful. You have to find the right pet sitter, make sure that you have enough food for the time you will be gone, and, if your like me, a few of your pet’s favorite toys. It can be emotional when I leave Hermione for any length of time, so I put together some of my tips for leaving your cat with a pet sitter.
Tips for Leaving Your Cat with a Pet Sitter
Find Someone You Can Trust
When picking a pet sitter you want someone that not only you trust, but that your pet trusts as well. You will want to introduce them to make sure that they seem comfortable around each other. Check their references and experience with animals to make sure that they have taken care of someone’s cat before. You might also want to find out if the sitter has any pets of their own. That could be a big factor in who you chose to watch your furry friend.
Preparing In Advance
Preparing in advance to go to the pet sitter can really help your cat. The way I do this is by sitting out the carrying cage a few days before. That way Hermione can get used to it and she doesn’t think of it as a punishment. Every time we put Hermione in the carrier is like the first, she hates it. So we like to get her warmed up to it a few days ahead of time.
Make Sure To Pack The Proper Food
Instead of packing a bag of food, I love the new SHEBA® PERFECT PORTIONS™ Paté since it’s individual serving size. This is perfect for feeding your cat so you don’t have to worry about the sitter overfeeding since the product includes the right amount of ounces to feed your furry friend. SHEBA® PERFECT PORTIONS™ Multipack Chicken Entrée is our go-to when trying to pack light.
Include Your Pet’s Favorite Toys
Since I take Hermione to a pet sitter, instead of having someone watch her at my house, I make sure to include all of her favorite toys to play with. That way it keeps her from chewing on stuff and getting into things she’s not supposed to in her new environment. This also reduces the stress of being away from home. She is able to take something familiar with her that she enjoys.
Along with toys, another great thing to show your cat love while at the pet sitter’s is by sending treats they love. SHEBA® Meaty Tender Sticks are savory snacks that will keep your cat meowing for more. Made with real meat and no artificial flavors, SHEBA® Cat Treats include mouthwatering ingredients your adult cat craves in a fun, stick-shaped snack that is easy for the sitter to give.
Pack Something With Your Scent
I always like to pack something that has my scent on it. This being a blanket or shirt, to give them a little touch of home. When dropping them off at the sitter’s house you will want to make sure that they have their own space for a blanket or bed when they want to be alone.

What a great idea to pack everything in a basket! My favorite tip of yours is to pack your cat something with your scent on it. That is genius and such a good thing to keep in mind! I’m going to do that for my dog when we leave him with my uncle when we are in Disney in a few weeks. #client
